half the liquidation posts are people who didn't know this and nuked their whole account. essentials: [Isolated] only the margin you put on THAT position is at risk. If it liquidates you lose just that, the rest of your balance is safe. Beginners / high leverage → always isolated. [Cross] your whole account balance is collateral. Liquidation comes later (harder to trigger), but one big adverse move can wipe the entire account. summary: want risk 'caged' to one position → isolated. Hedging multiple positions with capital efficiency (advanced) → cross. If unsure, start isolated. Full-size on cross is the fast lane to zero.
